Memory Boats – Voyage
These large floating boats range from twelve to twenty feet. Large enough that we can imagine riding in them, being at sea or perhaps adrift in the cultural images they contain. To convey the transparent, overlapping nature of the imaginal realm, I paint in superimposed layers that can float independently, or meld together with the other layers to create unexpected forms. These painted images can arise from the unconscious; dreams, the unexpected, and the transformational.
Because they appear from such uncharted territories, they may raise questions of origin, cultural expectation, authority, power, and balance. Contained within the shadow reflections are what appear to be whimsical elements along side of terrifying ones. This juxtaposition creates a startling quality that also exists in the reality of daily life. These shadow images directly relate in meaning to the boat form it reflects, illuminating the often darker culturally suppressed or hidden aspects reflected within the image/story of the boat.
